The Australia China International Cultural Exchange Society (ACICES) was successfully launched at a ceremony held on 26 June 2010 at the Guangzhou Garden Hotel. The ceremony and exchange forum drew strong government support and appreciation.
The Deputy Consul- General of Australia, Consulate General Guangzhou, Mr. Jeff Turner, was present at the ceremony as the Guest of Honor and extended his congratulations in person. Mr. Turner emphasized in his speech that Australia’s relationship with China is critically important and strong people-to people links are a particularly important part of the robust and growing bilateral relationship. Mr. Turner also pointed out that, in terms of education, over 150,000 Chinese students enrolled in Australian institutions in 2009 and some 30,000 students studied for an Australian qualification in joint programs in China. This flow of students promotes closer people-to-people links and a better understanding of the cultures and societies of both countries. In conclusion, Mr. Turner expressed his expectation that ACICES would play an important role in the process of cultural and educational exchange and cooperation between the two countries.
Mr. Jianbo Ma, Lifelong Honorary Patron and Chairman of ACICES, Vice Chairman of Dalian Overseas Chinese Chamber of Commerce, President of Overseas Chinese Association and Deputy to the People’s Congress, Professor Gary Martin, Honorary Chairman of ACICES and Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Murdoch University and Dr. Katherine Su Nie, Justice of the Peace and founding President of ACICES, expressed in their speeches that ACICES is dedicated to promoting Australia China cultural and educational exchange. ACICES commits to cooperating with people from all walks of life in achieving its aims.
Distinguished guests of the ceremony, either present or sending congratulations letters, including the Western Australian (WA) Minister for Education and Tourism, CEO of the WA Department of Education Services, State Manager of the State Migration Centre, WA Small Business Development Centre, AustCham representative, People’s Government of Guangdong Province Inspector Advisor, Young Generation Committee of Department of Education of Guangdong and Enterprise Culture Association of Guangdong Province. 23 highly recognized universities attended the meeting. Over 100 academic professionals including Vice-Chancellors, Faculty Deans, Directors of Foreign Affairs Offices, Professors and education experts were present at the ceremony. Best practice in educational and cultural exchange and cooperation was discussed. Potential opportunities for cooperation were also explored. Additionally, Universities from the two countries exchanged ideas on mutual-supplementation of educational resources, establishing cooperation programs and academic staff training and exchange.
During the ceremony, South China University of Technology and Guangzhou University officially entered into articulation agreements with Murdoch University for the Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Engineering. Murdoch University was ranked 8th nationally for Research Intensity in the Australian Government’s Teaching and Learning Performance Fund in 2007. Guangdong University of Business Studies also formally signed an agreement for joint Masters programs with Curtin University of Technology, which has been included in the “The World’s top 200 Universities” by The Times Educational Supplement for 3 consecutive years. All these successful cooperation agreements add to the list of university cooperation programs successfully facilitated by ACICES since its foundation. Other universities present also explored cooperation opportunities and agreed on future directions.
